  • What You Will Do

    The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO). PD Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations. This position supports nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory and promotes a workplace culture centered on mutual respect and inclusivity, ensuring freedom from discrimination and harassment for all.

    Engineering Technologist 4 ($112,000 - $186,700)

    As an Engineering Technologist assigned to the PD Group, you will act as the lead technical representative for engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and closeout of projects. You will be expected to lead and manage the development of projects with an integrated project team (IPT) that includes both customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts and others. This position requires a seasoned, experienced professional with expert knowledge of engineering designs, calculations and application of engineering methods and technologies. The selected candidate must demonstrate expert knowledge of engineering work planning/control, and construction methods. The work requires the following job duties:

    • Advance your career in the project engineering field.

    • Work with a team of experience project engineers with expert knowledge.

    • Be part of a project team that cares about the work the perform.

    • Lead the integrated project team on all technical matters related to a project.

    • Work as a subcontract administrator for design subcontracts.

    • Develop cost estimates.

    • Manage technical requirements for construction.

    • Lead closeout activities.

    • Become an expert in Conduct of Engineering.

    • Plan, forecast, and identify necessary engineering resources.

    • Resolve field-initiated questions on engineering, visit jobsites, and aide in the resolution of construction related technical issues.

    • Make recommendations to engineering management.

    • Mentor junior project engineers.

    • Support projects in DOE/NNSA nonreactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Minimum 12 years working experience in engineering systems and calculations, as well as application of engineering methods and technologies.

    • Demonstrated experience in leading a design team and/or organization.

    • Minimum 12 years working experience in engineering work planning, budgeting, and design coordination.

    • Contribute to the development of organizational goals, initiatives, and objectives.

    • Demonstrated ability to mentor early career engineers.

    • Minimum 12 years working experience with design and construction contracts.

    • Minimum 12 years' experience in cost engineering functions, including cost estimating, cost control, financial reporting systems, and cost and variance analysis.

    • Demonstrate experience of project execution and project management processes/procedures, detailed engineering, and construction work processes.

    • Minimum 12 years working experience with engineering construction methods, methods of design and construction, related construction practices and the economics involved and application of industry codes and standards.

    • Demonstrated experience as a senior technical advisor implementing, overseeing, and assessing engineering activities.

    • Minimum 12 years working Experience in the development and implementation of a Project engineering program.

    • Demonstrated experience with development of safety class and safety significant designs.

    Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

    Work Location: This position will be onsite located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

    Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

    *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

    Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

    Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
