UMIAQ Environmental provides a comprehensive suite of environmental consulting services, which include documentation of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance, construction and access permitting, environmental site assessments, stakeholder engagement, sampling and remediation of contaminated sites, management of hazardous waste, wetlands monitoring, and more.     This is a full-time position located in Anchorage, Alaska.UMIAQ Environmental's main office is in Anchorage, from which our talented professional, technical, and seasonal staff lead projects throughout the State.

    The Environmental Specialist's goal is to support development of NEPA documents including Environmental Assessments, assist in research, develop permit packages, and support projects within UMIAQ Environmental. Essential to this role is a love of writing and strong communication skills.

    Responsibilities

    Specific duties and responsibilities are as follows

    • Analyzing environmental impact and providing detailed written analysis, supported by evidence-based research and best available science.

    • Writing work plans, safety plans, and wildlife interaction plans.

    • Develop detailed project descriptions based on information received verbally in meetings and on project drawings/ schematics.

    • Follow existing procedures for document review, organization, and file structure.

    • Communicate clearly and respectfully to all coworkers, clients, and stakeholders.

    Other duties may include wetlands monitoring, report writing, proposal writing, preparation of cost estimates, and more

    • Expertise in clear and concise writing is required.

    • It is essential that the Environmental Specialist works well with people and has demonstrated strong communication skills.

    • Extensive software skills are required, including working familiarity with MS Office Suite, Adobe, as well as Internet research abilities.

    • Planning, organizing, and prioritizing workload are primary duties. The Environmental Specialist must be flexible and capable of adapting to changing timelines.

    • Ability to work methodically and independently.

    • Ability to work as part of a team.

    Qualifications

    Required Experience

    • Minimum 2 years' experience applying NEPA, obtaining project authorizations in Alaska, or working in a similar position/ similar field.

    • Familiarity with environmental and regulatory requirements for construction projects in Alaska, including an understanding of the NEPA process.

    • General understanding of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and landownership in the State.

    • Essential to this role are strong writing, grammar, and citation skills. Please provide a writing example.

    • MS Office Suite: Word and Excel, Adobe

    Preferred Experience

    • Bachelor Degree in Natural Resources, Biology, Earth Science, or related field.

    Authorized Driver Requirement: Employee must have a valid driver's license and three (3) year clean driving record. Employee must follow all Authorized Driver Policy and Procedures regarding approved vehicle usage.
