    NSF's NOIRLab is the preeminent US national center for ground-based, nighttime optical and infrared astronomy. The mission of NOIRLab is to enable breakthrough discoveries in astrophysics by developing and operating state-of-the-art ground-based observatories and providing data products and services for a diverse and inclusive community.     The JWST Science Student Assistant will be under the supervision of Ryan Lau and will be responsible for data analysis and scientific interpretation of JWST observations of the dust-forming Wolf-Rayet (WR) binary WR140. The Student Assistant will run analysis on JWST MIRI imaging data and conduct a morphological study of the circumstellar material around WR140 to investigate WR binary dust formation.

    Essential Functions:

    • Responsible for conducting an analysis of the spatially resolved morphological material around WR140.

    • Develop and test JWST/MIRI imaging artefact suppression code for bright sources.

    • Deliver and support imaging artefact suppression code (optional).

    • Assist in the analysis and interpretation of complementary JWST results (optional).

    Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:

    • Enrolled in a PhD program in a relevant field (astronomy, physics, computer science)

    • Experience with astronomical observations and data analysis as well as scientific coding in python is required.

    • Self-motivated, highly organized and dependable.

    • Must possess - 1) ability to read and understand instructions, drawings, safety guides, and other written materials necessary to perform job; 2) sufficient visual capacity to perform the applicable functions without assistance of visual aids other than eye contacts or eye glasses; 3) sufficient spoken aural capacity to hear and understand instructions, warning bells, fire alarms, or shouted instructions without assistance of auditory aids other than a hearing aid; and 4) ability to impart information orally so that others understand and can respond appropriately

    Salary Range: $17.20/hr. The final salary will depend on skills, qualifications and experience.
