• Lagrangian Particle Solid Mechanics Postdoc

Los Alamos National LaboratoryLos Alamos, NM 87544

    Job #2631216887

  • What You Will Do

The Eulerian Codes Group (XCP-2) in the X-Computational Physics (XCP) Division is seeking talented and motivated postdoc candidates. The Eulerian Codes Group is responsible for developing and maintaining large scale, massively parallel multi-physics codes used in national security applications. This appointment will focus on adding and testing new capabilities in a multi-physics code that utilizes the Material Point Method to model to the onset of damage and dynamic evolution of fractured material. Typical scenarios include prediction of fragmentation due to high explosive loading or hyper-velocity impacts. Some of the new capabilities that will be targeted include multi-material interaction/contact and how the MPM numerical method interacts with the Eulerian host code such as fluid structure interaction. The successful candidate is expected to work in a team environment with computational scientists, theoreticians, and experimentalists, become familiar with production software carpentry practices, and publish results.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    Technical Knowledge

For this role you must have knowledge and experience implementing numerical methods and a knowledge of solid and continuum mechanics.

    Software Engineering & Design

You will need to have proficiency with modern Fortran, C, C++, or Python.

    Collaboration

Teamwork is essential to the success of our group. As such you will need to have demonstrated the ability to function effectively in a team environment with a willingness to learn new skills and be flexible in work assignments. This includes exhibiting professional conduct in interactions with co-workers and supervisors.

    Education/Experience

Position requires a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, physics, engineering, or a closely related field completed within the past five years or soon to be completed.

    Communication

Communication skills are critical in our group. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.

    Clearance

This position requires the ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance, which typically requires US Citizenship.

    Desired Qualifications:

    Software Carpentry

Experience with software version control (git), make/build systems, debuggers and deploying numerical algorithms to heterogeneous computing architectures.

    Multiphysics Simulation Software

Candidates with experience implementing and knowledge of numerical methods for solving systems of partial differential equations, or experience deploying numerical algorithms in a production software environment will be given preference. Technical areas of interest include material point method (MPM), smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and Lagrangian/Eulerian hydrodynamics.
