  • What You Will Do

    The Applied Electrodynamics group (AOT-AE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a recent graduate in the field of physics, computer science, applied mathematics, or a related field. The initial appointment is flexible from three months up to one year, and may be on a full-time or part-time basis pending applicant needs. Potential for longer appointment available based on applicant performance.

    The successful candidate will join the Los Alamos Accelerator Code Group (LAACG) to develop, support, and modernize accelerator Simulation Codes. Duties will include programming in Fortran and creating software packages for distribution to internal and external clients. You will work in collaboration with LAACG members that currently include one LANL staff member, one postdoc, and an external collaborator.

    • Excellent academic record (minimum 3.2 GPA)

    • Proficiency in computer programming using languages such as Fortran, C++, Python, or the ability to learn new computer languages rapidly.

    • Demonstrated ability to perform individually with minimal supervision.

    • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills.

    • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

    • Ability to uphold the Laboratory's mission, vision, culture, and values.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience using Windows, Mac OS, and Linux computers.

    • Experience using code compilers such as the Lahey Fortran compiler or GCC compiler.

    • Experience building software installers (e.g. using Installshield for Windows)

    • Knowledge and/or experience with particle accelerators and accelerator physics.

    Work Location:

    This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM at TA-53. Remote/hybrid work is a possibility.

    The Applied Electrodynamics group (AOT-AE) is situated at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) accelerator site in Los Alamos, NM. AOT-AE performs accelerator research, design, commissioning, and support for several accelerator projects, including SCORPIUS/ECSE, the LANSCE accelerator, accelerators for global security and space applications, and local accelerator test stands for R&D. AOT-AE leverages the discipline of electrodynamics for the benefit of present and future LANL missions in national security, discovery science, and stockpile stewardship. AOT-AE anticipates, innovates, and executes high-impact, breakthrough science and engineering as a core Laboratory capability.     No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
