  • What You Will Do

    Prototype Fabrication Division's Manufacturing Group (PF-MFG) is seeking qualified machinists to provide machining support for the fabrication of components vital to the Lab's mission.

    Prototype Fabrication machinists facilitate the manufacturing of parts and assemblies by performing the programming, set-up, and operation of manual and CNC mills and lathes, EDM, and a variety of other general machine shop tooling. Machinists work from complex drawings, sketches, CAD models, and verbal instructions. Additionally, they will manufacture complex parts made from common and exotic materials with precise tolerances.

    The selected candidate will work in a team environment in both classified and unclassified work areas to provide fabrication services for a variety of customers both internal and external to Los Alamos National Laboratory.

    Education & Work Experience

    • An Associate Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program AND 4 years of experience; OR completion of a Journeyperson qualification program and 2 years of experience.

    Machining

    • Working knowledge of conventional, CNC, and advanced manufacturing techniques to produce parts with a high degree of difficulty and tight tolerances, typically +/- .0005.

    • Experience programming, setting up, and operating lathes.

    • Skilled in applied shop mathematics.

    • Proficiency in machining processes, tools, and operations to obtain various tolerances.

    • Knowledge of applied material properties.

    • Ability to create CAD/CAM files or G&M Code.

    • Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.

    Drawings & Specifications

    • Ability to read and interpret drawings and sketches that use GD&T symbols to determine design factors including size, shape, position and arrangement of features.

    Dimensional Inspection Knowledge

    • Ability to perform basic precision measurements on parts using inspection tools including calipers, micrometers, and verniers.

    Customer Service

    • Ability to create manufacturing drawings or sketches for the production of parts.

    • Ability to effectively communicate with customers to extract design intent.

    Clearance

    • Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance (the employer will support the selected candidate through this application process).

    Desired Qualifications:

    • CAD/CAM experience; preferably SolidWorks, CREO or MasterCam.

    • Knowledge of turret lathes with live tooling and a Y axis.

    • Working knowledge of Mazak Integrex machines.

    • Experience with programming CNC Mills and Wire EDM machines.

    • Ability to troubleshoot customer drawings and provide recommendations for revisions to enhance manufacturability.

    • Established DOE Q Clearance is highly desirable.

    Work Environment:

    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

    Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

    *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (~~~) for additional information.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

    Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

    Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
