  • What You Will Do

    The LANL NCS Program is seeking a highly qualified and motivated post-baccalaureate student to assist in the discipline of nuclear criticality safety. The program provides mentoring, hands-on field experience, technical skills development, and professional opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's chosen area of study.

    Examples of NCS experiences include, but are not limited to:

    • Field experience such as facility-familiarization activities and witnessing nuclear operations.

    • Learning the physics, engineering, and administrative fundamentals of the NCS discipline.

    • Assisting in developing technical bases for safety arguments for real-world operations.

    • Modelling of fissile-bearing systems in a variety of physical settings.

    • Developing digital tools for the administrating of a safety program.

    • Developing computational tools and techniques.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • BS Degree from an accredited program in nuclear engineering or related field completed within the last 3 years with a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

    • Not yet accepted and enrolled in a graduate program.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Laboratory experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safety.

    • Completed coursework or research experience in one of the disciplines stated above.

    • Completed coursework in introduction to nuclear criticality safety.

    • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

    • Computer programming in support of scientific or engineering analysis.

    • Demonstrated good communication (verbal and written) skills.

    • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment.

    • Experience writing technical papers or proposals.

    Work Env i ronment:

    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

    Clearance : Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

    *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
