  • Job Description

    Under general supervision, responsible for all activities relating to packaging and shipping of government and contractor owned materials and equipment. Use publications and procedures that describe hazardous classifications of materials to assure proper packaging and handling. Determine requirements and construct all types of sizes of standard, non-standard and special crates, and components to be used for domestic and export shipments and storage. Take measurements and prepare field drawings, if required, for non-standard and special crates. Interpret drawings, documents, customer specifications and sketches to ascertain material requirements and construction composition. Devise new methods of crating, packing, blocking, shoring, bracing, securing, weighing, and loading items to be shipped. Interface, process and expedite supply actions between departments/sections and other companies or government/tenant activities. Operating computer equipment, as required, to obtain data and/or input date. *Must have attended three (3) out of six (6) courses that specifically deal with the packaging, handling, and transporting of hazardous materials and dangerous goods. Certain test scores must be obtained to receive a Certification of Compliance for each course. Only a Certification of Compliance is considered as a passing grade. Failure to meet and/or maintain this testing criteria will constitute a downgrade to a lower graded job. Perform any work assigned to the employees in the classification. Perform work in other classifications when incidental but necessary to accomplish work assignment.

    Performs work in compliance with Federal, State, local, NASA and Air Force laws and regulations and requirements and KSC/CCAFS relating to the business of the section, working within the limits of established policy.

    ASSOCIATED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Check for quantity, part numbers, tag numbers, etc. on materials to be crated/shipped. Nail, bolt, and band crates. Label/stencil shipping crates and boxes. Apply sealing compound to crates and use dehydrators, as required.

    Ensure that hazardous materials are properly classified, described, packaged, and handled.

    Advise management relative to decals and placards to be used on all shipments.

    Determine manpower and material requirements to complete packing and shipping tasks at off-site locations.

    Inspect outbound truck shipments assuring proper tiedown and use of dunnage.

    Obtain the necessary receipts for outbound shipments.

    Operate hoists, winches, and ground control cranes, when necessary.

    Verify and determine shipping requirements.

    Refuel vehicles, check water, oil, and battery, as required.

    Inform management of any developments affecting the proper storing, handling, and transporting of equipment and material items.

    Use power or hand cutting tools and equipment to accomplish work assignment.

    Make proper tie-in with other shifts as necessary and maintain written logs.

    Investigate delays and recommend action to management.

    Operate computer equipment, as required, to obtain data and/or input data.

    Maintain logs and records, as required.

    Must maintain security level, area permit(s), licenses, certifications, etc. required for performance of essential tasks.

    Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.

    Performs other related and/or associated duties as required.

    This classification may include managing hazardous materials or other environmental responsibilities.

    *DEFINITION OF REQUIRED COURSES:

    1. **"Transportation of Hazardous Materials and Dangerous Goods" - Basic Course (CFR-49)

    Five-day (40 hour) course. Agenda consists of daily examinations and a final examination the last day which requires a grade of 85% or higher to receive the Certificate of Compliance.

    1. **"Transportation of Hazardous Materials and Dangerous Goods" - Advanced Course (CFR-49)

    Five-day (40 hour) course. Agenda consists of daily examinations and a final examination the last day, which requires a grade of 85% or higher to receive the Certification of Compliance.

    1. **"Basic Air Transportation of Dangerous Goods Compliance and Enforcement Certification Course" - (FAA ICAO/IATA)

    Three-day (24 hour) course Agenda consists of daily examinations and a final examination the last day, which requires a grade of 85% or higher to receive the Certificate of Compliance.

    1. **"Basic Air Transportation of Dangerous Goods Compliance and enforcement Recertification Course - (FAA ICAO/IATA)

    One day (8 hour) course. A one-day recertification course to advise the employee of upcoming changes and/or updates to the Regulations. The course is also a one-day intense refresher which also requires a passing grade of 85% or higher.

    1. **"Defense Packaging of Hazardous Materials for Transportation" - (Course #8B-F7 (JT))

    Ten-day (80 hour) course. This is an intense 10-day course which requires examinations daily. If examinations are not passed, the student is expelled on that day. There is also a final examination on the last day which must be passed to receive the Certificate of Compliance.

    1. **"Defense Packaging of Hazardous Materials for Transportation Refresher" - (Course #8B-F35-(JT))

    Five-day (40 hour) course. This course is mandatory every two years by the military to ship via their support.

    Education

    High school diploma or G.E.D. or have had specialized training from a vocational,

    community college, or accredited institution.

    Experience

    Three to five years related experience in shipping (packing and crating) functions, hazardous material shipments, interpreting drawings and carpentry skills to construct customized crates, boxes, and/or pallets.

    Prior experience and familiarization with small hand power tools, table saws, radial arm saws, drill presses, and band saws.

    Experienced and working knowledge of Maximo and basic computer software operations including Microsoft application such as Outlook, Word, and Excel and be able to enter and retrieve data as required.

    Must possess the ability to read, comprehend, and utilize all State, Federal, International, and military regulations that governs the shipment of hazardous materials for all modes of

    transportation (ground/truck, rail, vessel, and aircraft).

    Working knowledge of military standards/specifications for the construction of

    shipping and storage containers is preferred.

    Training/Skills:

    Possess good organizational and communication skills

    Must be able to successfully complete required training courses for the processing/shipping of hazardous materials as specified in job description. Training/testing is required every two (2) years with successful results.

    Must possess and maintain forklift certification for forklifts up to and including 30K.

    Receive direction and pay close attention to detail.

    Must have and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.

    Physical Requirements

    Regularly lift and/or move objects up to 50lbs.

    Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.

    Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl

    Occasionally required to sit and climb.

    Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust and focus.
