    A Day in The Life

    Located in either Boston, MA, North Haven, CT, or Wessling , Germany: As a Principal Software Engineer, you will be a lead contributor and mentor to a team of software engineers that develops software for driving the behavior of the Robotic Assisted Surgery platform. The software development involves creating sophisticated state machines that coordinate the behavior of multiple computing nodes based on input from users and hardware. You will focus on the design, development, and testing of software that drives the behavior of surgical stapling and bipolar electrosurgical vessel sealing instruments. In addition, you will collaborate with a cross-functional team of systems engineers, hardware engineers, and controls engineers to develop software requirements for the use of the Robotic Assisted Surgery platform.

    Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned

    • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to define software requirements pertaining to state machines that serve as the "brain" of the system and coordinate behavior across multiple computing nodes.

    • Provide technical and professional mentorship to colleagues and provide valuable technical insight and guidance to the team.

    • Rapidly design and develop software and supporting tools in MATLAB/Simulink and test your software changes on the surgical robotic system.

    • Use your expertise to triage defects, develop software unit tests, and review the testing team's software verification protocols.

    • Analyze the software for failure modes and develop solutions that mitigate risk.

    • Contribute updates to your team's software documentation and architecture.

    • Improve the quality of your team's software through design reviews, and ensure your work complies with the procedures of the organization's quality management system.

    • Join an Agile Scrum team that collaboratively plans sprints, improves the quality of the team's backlog of tickets, and defines and completes tasks.

    Must Have: Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor's Degree with 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 5 years of relevant experience.

    Nice to Have

    • Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail, with ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to build consensus and establish common goals.

    • Experience developing software for commercial products, preferably in regulated industries

    • Experience developing software in a Linux environment

    • Strong knowledge of computer science, including how operating systems and compilation works

    • Comfortable with common development tools: build automation (cmake preferred), code coverage, unit testing, static analysis, debugging, source control, etc.

    • Experience developing software in C/C++ with strong object-oriented programming skills

    • Experience developing software with state machines (Matlab Stateflow preferred)

    • Experience designing software using visual modeling languages (UML, SysML)

    • Knowledge of surgical robotics

    • Fluency in English

    • Ability to travel up to 25%

    The provided base salary range is used nationally (except in certain CA locations). The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience, certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.
