  • What You Will Do

    The Space Science and Applications Group (ISR-1) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to assist with efforts related to the study of radiation detection and transport. The postdoc will be expected to provide support to two projects within ISR-1:

    • Developing a charged particle detection instrument for a NASA crewed missions, and

    • Understanding radiation transport and effects on a variety of materials through simulation and with the use of accelerated electron beams.

    For both projects laboratory work will be a primary responsibility, but simulation experience with common Monte Carlo frameworks like Geant4 or MCNP are highly desirable.

    ISR-1 is part of the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) division at LANL. We specialize in building, operating, and analyzing data from space-based instruments for a range of national security and basic science missions and are supported by many different government agencies including the DOE, DOD, and NASA.     What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Passion to learn and collaborate with researchers from different fields.

    • Laboratory work experience, strong documentation habits

    • Experience in the phenomenology of radiation transport and interactions with matter

    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally.

    Education/Experience

    Ph.D. in physics, nuclear engineering, or a closely related field by the beginning of the postdoctoral appointment, obtained no earlier than April 2019.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Radiation source handling

    • Programming/coding (e.g., Python, C++)

    • Experience with particle accelerator experimentation and diagnostics

    • Experience with radiation detectors (e.g., HPGe, LaBr3, Si, scintillators)

    • Experience with Monte Carlo modelling and simulation (e.g., MCNP, GEANT4)

    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500. For more information go to Postdoc Program website at ~~~ .

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

    Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

    Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

    *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (~~~) for additional information.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
