  • What You Will Do

    Work for one of the world's most innovative and creative multidisciplinary research institutions engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. The Space Science and Applications Group (ISR-1) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for a scientists to contribute to and lead efforts related to the study of radiation transport in space and laboratory environments.     This position will be filled at the Scientist 2 or 3 level depending on skills and qualifications. Higher job levels will have additional responsibilities as detailed below.

    Scientist 2: ($99,200 - $164,100)

    As a Radiation Transport Scientist you will contribute to the study of radiation transport and radiation detection in space systems in support of ongoing programs and future projects. Your key responsibilities will be to perform radiation transport simulations, radiation detector measurements, and data analysis. You will provide technical expertise to support radiation detection projects, feasibility studies and you will have the opportunity to mentor junior staff. You will need to communicate your work and results to project leaders and colleagues.

    Scientist 3: ($119,200 - $201,100)

    In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, you will lead technical efforts, provide subject matter expertise to support radiation detection projects, modeling and simulation efforts, and feasibility studies for future mission concepts; you will also mentor staff scientists, assist in the technical effort, and formulate requirements for space systems.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Nuclear or particle physics background and/or other demonstrated familiarity with radiation transport;

    • Experience with simulations and working on Linux-based systems;

    • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical results; and

    • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a diverse team.

    Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3 :

    In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

    • Demonstrated experience with radiation transport modeling using Geant4 or MCNP or similar software packages;

    • Demonstrated ability to lead a small team and provide effective mentorship to colleagues.

    Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor' degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

    Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Familiarity with Geant4 or MCNP;

    • Familiarity with radiation detectors; and

    • Current DOE Q and/or active TS/SCI security clearances.

    Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.     Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.     Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

    • Eligibility requirements : To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

    No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

    New-Employment Drug Test : The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

    Regular position : Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

    Internal Applicants : Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
