    Description:

    POSITION PURPOSE

    Operates diagnostic imaging equipment to obtain routine radiographs of designated body

    portions for interpretation by physicians. In doing so, positions patients and adjust

    equipment for each examination. Assists radiologist in administrating contrast media

    required in specific diagnostic procedures. Performs such duties in several diagnostic imaging areas.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Reviews requests and schedules patients for radiologic procedures, arranging for

    patient transport to the procedure area.

    1. Reviews requests for procedures, using reason(s) for the procedures, department

    guidelines, physician recommendations and personal judgment to determine

    region(s) to be examined and diagnostic images to be obtained.

    1. Consults with the Radiologist to determine the need for additional diagnostic images

    for comprehensive examinations.

    1. Prepares patients for diagnostic procedures by transferring and positioning patients,

    attaching or arranging immobilization and support devices, explaining the procedure,

    instructing and reassuring patients, using care, courtesy and tact.

    1. Assists the Radiologist in performance of routine radiographs, adjusts, manipulates

    and controls a variety of imaging equipment, and accessories used in performing

    diagnostic procedures.

    1. Applies knowledge of human anatomy and understanding of patient's condition to

    determine appropriate radiologic or testing techniques and to assure accurate, high

    quality images for diagnostic interpretation.

    1. Monitors patient's condition before and during performance of diagnostic

    procedures, recognizing changes that may require emergency actions and initiating

    appropriate responses.

    1. Provides accurate diagnostic image identification, processes diagnostic images, and

    monitors image quality.

    1. Documents procedure verification and procedural and quality control data, using a

    computerized system, and determines need for and performs necessary re-imaging.

    1. Collects all completed diagnostic images and forwards to appropriate location(s) for

    interpretation and results reporting.

    1. Calculates, prepares, logs and assists the Radiologist in administering and checking

    contrast media required in specific diagnostic procedures.

    1. Practices sterile, isolation and aseptic techniques to prevent contamination, and

    maintains documentation of infection control procedures and activities.

    1. Applies knowledge of potential radiation hazards and observes appropriate radiation safety regulations.

    2. Assists in maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the clinical patient areas by

    monitoring and ordering supplies used in diagnostic procedure areas, and by

    cleaning imaging equipment and accessories.

    1. Monitors quality control on a daily basis; reports operational and functional

    instrumentation problems to appropriate personnel.

    1. Demonstrates clinical imaging procedures to students and new staff members, as

    assigned, and participates in scheduled training, orientation and in-services

    imaging areas. Educational and staff development activities.

    1. May assume lead function in designated areas and/or oversee the activities of staff.

    2. Maintains BLS competency as evidenced by attendance at an annual BLS review.

    3. Maintains registry by obtaining necessary continuing education credits.

    4. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a

    constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in

    their resolution.

    1. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient,

    physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Discusses

    patient/hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately.

    1. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner,

    to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable

    hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

    1. Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, developmental and

    cultural needs through competent clinical practice. Demonstrates unit/area

    competencies.

    OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

    Education: Requires Associate's degree in Radiologic Technology or equivalent

    combination of education and experience in an AMA approved school

    of Radiological Technology.

    Experience: Three to six months on the job training or previous experience.

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Interpersonal skills necessary in order to interact effectively with patients who may be under

    physical and emotional stress and gather and exchange routine patient information with nursing

    personnel and physicians.

    Analytical skills necessary to determine best method of providing requested radiographs

    based on the specifics of individual case, ensuring clear and undistorted pictures.

    Ability to lift and position patients for up to twenty percent of work time and stand and walk for

    up to eighty percent of work time when transporting patients, taking x-rays, delivering films

    and so forth.
