  • GENERAL PURPOSE

    Performs professional accounting work with responsibility in one or more areas of the University accounting system such as financial reporting, cost analysis and distribution, classification of accounts and funds, study of accounting systems and sponsored programs accounting. (Concentration on type and intensity of work performed varies according to functional areas integrally related to supervisory responsibilities).

    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Under general direction and with latitude to exercise independent judgment within established policy

    Develops and recommends policies and procedures for accounting systems and financial reporting.

    Reviews financial data being processed through accounting systems in order to isolate problem areas (requiring working knowledge of data being processed and specific computer programs being used). Analyzes problem and makes recommendations for modifying or developing new segments of an accounting system including associated accounts, records, reports and controls for approval at higher levels.

    Prepares instruction for changes in accounting systems (e.g. contributes to the "Accounting Systems Notebook" which is a guide to users of the system); interprets accounting systems data output to the Finance Department staff; provides consultative service to University officials and, as required, trains academic and administrative staff in accounting matters related to their respective areas, and advises and interprets accounting/budgeting relationships for them.

    Prepares routine reports and special reports tailored to informational needs of University Officers indicating the current or projected status of funds.

    Designs financial reports and statements for University management reflecting fiscal operations of specific programs (e.g. operational costs, cash forecasts and comparable information); interprets trends and projects data into the future; prepares reports for submission to Federal and State agencies regarding status of sponsored projects.

    Performs cost finding analyses for use in recommending rates for redistribution of costs or recovery from third party sponsored programs.

    Performs analyses and tests necessary to ascertain integrity of accounting data, account balances and timeliness of reporting. Makes day-to-day interpretations and decisions on the accounting treatment of financial transactions referred to him.

    Monitors special purpose funds (e.g. restricted, unrestricted, agency, etc.). Establishes accounting classifications, prepares reports in the status of such funds for department, investigators and deans; develops systems of controls.

    Consults with internal and external auditors on matters such as definition and classification of accounts, accounting activity in educational and research programs and other technical aspects of the University accounting system.

    Organizes schedules and supervises the work of subordinate technical and clerical employees engaged in a variety of accounting procedures. Assists or advises other Accountants on more difficult problems and on interpretation and implementation of policies and procedures.

    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    Bachelor's degree in Accounting, and 3 years experience as a staff accountant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Pay Range

    Pay Range: $ 53,500 - $ 74,900 Annually

    The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
