    Safety is the term we use to refer to the space where operations and security overlap. Safety practitioners are those rare individuals that understand both operations and security. As a safety practitioner you would partner with service teams to identify areas that could be improved to deliver better, safer outcomes for our customers. That means driving improvements in tools, processes, and engineering. Safety practitioners are our chief problem finders and solution developers. They work as members of service teams, earning trust and helping to deliver solutions to real business challenges.

    The safety practitioner is a senior role within the security and operations space. Working hand in hand with systems architects and engineering leadership to develop deep understanding of how and why systems function the way they do, identifying opportunities for improvement and driving change within the service or the wider business overall.

    Successful candidates must demonstrate understanding of distributed systems, making technical tradeoffs, and driving consensus among engineering leadership. The safety role is novel in the industry, there's no pre-canned people ready to fill it. Safety embeds need to understand both operations and security.

    Responsibilities

    • Embed within a core service teams and act as the "bridge" between Security, Operations, and the service team.

    • Participate in the daily rhythm of business for that service team. Attend daytime on call, support and build trust with the service team.

    • Identify potential safety risks related to tools, practices or engineering.

    • Help senior leadership understand risks and drive the correct tradeoffs.

    • Partner with service architects to review key architectural decisions. Provide a "Safety Examination" of future design proposals.

    • Perform an active operations/SRE roll within the service, shadow on-calls and document knowledge of how the service operates, making note of great practices (that the business should copy) as well as those that are unsafe.

    • Operate as a "forward controller" for the Offensive Security team, guiding them to pay special attention to any external facing parts of the service that look particularly sensitive or concerning.

    • Co-Lead response to security incidents.

    Basic Qualifications

    • Either:

    • Demonstrated senior level experience in an SRE/Ops, with a good understand of Security

    • Demonstrated senior level experience in Security, with a good understanding of SRE/Ops

    • BS degree in Computer Science or related technical field involving coding or equivalent practical experience.

    • 10+ years of total experience with software development with 5+ years on the cloud back-end.

    • Working knowledge of programming languages, preferably GO and Java.

    • Good knowledge of scripting languages such as Python.

    • Experience working on large-scale, highly distributed services infrastructure.

    • Experienced with microservice design patterns and service-to-service communication protocols along with developing highly reliable services.

    • Systematic problem-solving approach, strong communication skills, a sense of ownership, and drive.

    • Experience working in an operational environment with mission-critical tier-one services.

    • Familiarity with host virtualization technologies (KVM, Containers, Docker, etc.)

    • Good Knowledge of Computer Networking (OSI layers, HTTP, DNS, TCP/IP, DHCP, Routers, Gateways, Subnets, etc)

    • Knowledge of Linux internals, Linux/Unix troubleshooting skills.

    • Experiences managing security or availability incidents.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Prior Hands-on experience developing cloud services and tools on Oracle Cloud/AWS/GCP/Azure.

    US: Hiring Range: from $120,100 to $251,600 per annum. May be eligible for bonus, equity, and compensation deferral.

    Oracle maintains broad salary ranges for its roles in order to account for variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions and locations, as well as reflect Oracle's differing products, industries and lines of business.

    Candidates are typically placed into the range based on the preceding factors as well as internal peer equity.
