    Description

    Provide technical expertise, guidance and leadership in laboratory testing and analysis for domestic and international customers. Conduct research, analysis and experimentation on substances and samples to determine and evaluate their chemical and physical properties. Evaluate proper product and process development and applications, oversee quantitative and qualitative analysis, and ensure optimization and improvement of analytical methodologies to develop processes for new product development and quality assurance.

    • Oversee mainly non-routine and may perform complex metallurgical analysis of process samples or final products using wet chemistry and instrumental analytical techniques, reporting findings via management/customer reports, presentations and/or verbal discussions. Serves as technical expert on laboratory issues and analyses. Develop formulations, prepares standards and specifications for processes, facilities, products, and tests in support of research & development, material characterization, metallurgical process enhancements, and final product quality assurance and end-product improvements.

    • Oversee, troubleshoot and fine tune complex laboratory instrumentation and equipment, including reviewing, recommending, and implementing new or enhanced laboratory equipment or protocols; devising new equipment, and develop formulas, processes, and methods for solution of technical problems and evaluating and administering contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment.

    • Responsible for new analytical method development. Oversee analysis of organic and inorganic compounds to determine chemical and physical properties, utilizing such techniques as chromatography, spectroscopy, and spectrophotometry in support of new mining processes and business development.

    • Participate in/assists with providing training for uniformity of world-wide operations; participates in company sponsored steering teams such as Freeport-McMoRan Analytical Services Steering Team and applies learnings as appropriate.

    • Report quality control/quality analysis issues and make recommendations to Chief Chemist or appropriate site management for correction. Provides site leadership including oversight for technicians and junior chemists, establish SOP's and safety training; participate in training for uniformity of world-wide operations.

    • Provide leadership and guidance to junior chemists and technician and may hold direct supervisory responsibility for crews of chemistry lab technicians and/or junior chemists.

    • Maintain current working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local regulations.

    • Perform other duties as required.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or very closely related field with a strong emphasis in Chemistry (e.g., Chemical Engineering, Biology) and five (5) years experience as a Chemist in a research/analytical lab environment.

    • Knowledge of the principles and methods used in complex chemical, laboratory and quality assurance analyses.

    • Current knowledge of laboratory instrumentation.

    • Familiarity with modern analytical chemistry instrumentation methods.

    • Expertise in current instrumental analysis methods

    • Skill in effective communication, both verbal and written.

    • Good decision making skills regarding proper laboratory technique and comparative laboratory procedures.

    • Must have good application of computer programs and basic understanding of statistical data analysis.

    • Ability to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions.

    • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Skill in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.

    Preferred

    • Experience as lead or supervisor overseeing other chemists and/or lab technicians.

    • Skilled in resolving day-to-day questions/problems regarding equipment, materials, methods and procedures needed to complete projects.

    • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English

    • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards

    • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment

    • Work is in a lab or mine setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock,

    • Work does require appropriate knowledge and cautionary PPE to neutralize exposure to toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles.

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see.

    • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 40 pounds) during the course of the workday.

    • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.

    What We Offer You

    The estimated annual pay range for this role is currently? $79,000-$109,000/Annually .?This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance.
