    Position Summary:

    Functions as a senior technical staff member in a Shared Core laboratory facility that supports Light Microscopy experiments for University of Rochester faculty. The laboratory supports multiple NIH and other projects for multiple investigators (over 150 registered PIs) as well as actively develops methods to implement new technological capabilities. With broad guidance as to research project objectives, the person hired will function to train users on specified instruments, develop methodologies within the cores, support physiology and electrophysiology application development, and support for the lab manager as needed. This person will be in charge of day-to-day laboratory operations for specific projects, or for day-to-day operations in the individual's specific areas of expertise, while developing new methodologies for implementation in both the Confocal and Conventional Microscopy Core and in the Multiphoton Microscopy Core.

    Principle investigator (CCMC/MP Shared Resource laboratory director)

    Supervises:

    Technicians, postdocs fellows, graduate students, residents, principle investigators, undergraduates, external users.

    Responsibilities:

    • Organizes and undertakes lab activities as necessary to execute the work of all research projects as assigned by the Principal Investigator. Establishes proficiency in all laboratory based technologies as required for assigned projects, including both standard and novel methods of microscopy, cell biology, end immunochemistry. Develops specific proficiency in operating, maintaining and teaching microscopes, in particular the confocal and physiological applications for the multiphoton microscope. Develops and implements operating procedures for assigned laboratory equipment and routine laboratory methods. Assigns work, trains, and supervises staff/students who work in the shared resource laboratory.

    • Develops and modifies test methods. Develops core standards for specific applications. Teaches staff/students of both standard and novel laboratory methods including those of microscopy, cell biology, and immunochemistry. Provides training to all laboratory staff in the proper use and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation.

    • Develops and implements physiology and electrophysiology applications for multiphoton core users. Works directly with the vivarium to aid the ability of the vivarium to teach deep tissue surgical skills to new multiphoton users. Works with campus mechanic shops to develop novel specimen holders. Supervises implementation of surgical approaches in the multiphoton core.

    • Collects and analyzes data and prepares written reports for new shared resource applications. Maintains computer-based inventories and databases. Assists with writing of research results for publication.

    • Sets up, operates, and maintains complex scientific equipment Coordinates service support.

    • Coordinates regulatory compliance for the laboratory including health and safety, equipment maintenance and monitoring, and appropriate allocation of expenses for designated instruments. Coordinates compliance and monitors conflict of interest issues for external users.

    • Participates in core outreach activities including rotating lecture presentations with the PI for the CCMC/MP weekly outreach microscopy lecture series, participate in poster presentations, core tours for graduate students. CTSI students, and others interested in core instrumentation and operation.

    Qualifications:

    • Significant experience with multiphoton microscopic microscopy, in particular Olympus FV-1000 software for confocal and multiphoton microscopy, Axiovision software, and significant experience in image analysis.

    • First-hand experience in laboratory management and the ability to easily back-up the CCMC/MP lab manager as needed.

    • Computer proficiency, particularly with MS Excel and similar spreadsheets and data base programs.

    • Practical and theoretical proficiency in methods of multiple microscopy formats: brightfield, immunofluorescence, and confocal. Experience with multiphoton microscopy software is a plus. Ability to design brightfield and immunofluorescence experiments, and to train graduate students, medical students, residents, PI, and undergrads in the use of the biological application of microscopy to test the hypotheses of their experiments. Provide support for image analysis of experiments, either directly or in conjunction with the software manufacturer. Proficient in all processes related to immunostaining and immunofluorescence staining.

    • Experience in small animal handling (including mouse, rat, turtle) is highly desirable. Experience with surgery and physiological monitoring of small animals during surgery is desired. Familiarity with electrophysiology of small animals is a plus.

    • Familiarity with UR/URMC administrative and research core services is required. Familiarity with Nll-1 grant formats and publication journal formats is also required.

    • Masters degree in cell biology or similar field with 3 year's experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

    • Ph.D. preferred

    • 5 years in the field assignment with some independent research experience

    Pay Range

    Pay Range: $ 50,000 - $100,000 Annually

    The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
