  • What You Will Do

    The Plutonium Machining Group is the operational group at the forefront of pit manufacturing and investigating plutonium pits that are at the heart of the United States' modern thermonuclear weapons stockpile. The pit surveillance program supports early identification of stockpile aging concerns to predict the lifetime of weapon components and materials. Manufacturing and surveillance processes are conducted at the Laboratory's nuclear material handling facility, TA-55, PF-4.

    Special Materials Machinists (SMMs) are an essential workforce needed for the successful execution of the Laboratory's manufacturing and scientific missions. Come and join an innovative team machining precision actinide components in defense of our nation. This pipeline program is designed to prepare students for entry level Special Materials Machining positions in the nation's premier plutonium facility at TA-55.

    This competitive opportunity will reimburse awarded students' tuition and fees as an undergraduate intern at LANL. Students will be paid for hours in class at SFCC, for hours dedicated to the initiation of the security clearance process, for hours completing LANL required training, and for hours at the laboratory during on-site internships. Applicants will be considered for transition to full time employment upon graduation with an Associate's degree after meeting all LANL eligibility requirements.

    • Eligible for Q-level DOE security clearance, which requires US citizenship except in very rare circumstances generally not present in this program.

    • Pass Pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Testing

    • Pass Background Check

    Training/Certifications: Successful candidates will be expected to complete the Laboratory's SMM Qualification Program upon hire.

    Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of the AAS degree program in 2 consecutive years with a 3.0 GPA as determined by SFCC academic process.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Computer skills including use of Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and Teams.

    • Mechanically inclined.

    Note to Applicants: Upon successful completion of the program, students will commit to Los Alamos National Laboratory employment as an SMM at TA-55 in the plutonium facility for no less than 3 years. Failure to fulfill this commitment may result in repayment of tuition and fees to LANL.

    Work Schedule

    Typical schedule will be in classroom instruction Monday through Thursday at Santa Fe Community College and on-site internship at Los Alamos National Laboratory on Friday during Spring and Fall semesters. Summer breaks will require full time Internships at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

    Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

    *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (~~~) for additional information.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
