  • Responsibilities

    Job Summary:

    Responsible for in-depth analysis of medical records to abstract all diagnoses and procedures. Assigns (ICD-diagnosis, CPT, and HCPCS) codes from appropriate coding classification system.

    Supervised by:

    Manager of Coding Team

    Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

    20% Performs in depth analysis of electronic medical records to abstract diagnoses and procedures. May check the work of independent charge entry/coding staff.

    10% Confers with Physicians to obtain greater specificity and/or clarification on possible diagnoses.

    30% Uses thorough knowledge of coding systems and edit logic to assign appropriate codes. Understands third party payers to enable selection of appropriate codes and sequencing, including modifier assignment.

    5% Insures integrity of data prior to transmission.

    20% Inputs data into computer for billing, research, and clinical analysis purposes.

    10% As necessary, provides Physicians and other staff with information relative to coding.

    5% Prepares reports as requested and related clerical tasks.

    Requirements:

    Certification in one of the following: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) examination through American Academy of Professional Coders, American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) accreditation examination for Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or (Registered Health Information Technician) RHIT or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS, CCS-P) or Certified Coding Associate (CCA®) preferred. Knowledge of CPT, ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM required.

    Education:

    Associate degree in Health Information Technology. Minimum of two years coding for physician office setting or acute care facility preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Pay Range

    Pay Range: $ 21.03 - $ 28.56 Hourly

    The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
