    Summary

    This position supervises a staff of medical coders, either inpatient or outpatient, and related support positions across all entities that are owned or managed that have opted into shared services.

    100% remote

    Responsibilities

    1. Supervises the centralized coding and support staff who are primarily remote across the health care system including monitoring and managing work schedules, monitors attendance, motivates, counsels and disciplines as needed. Recruits, skills test, interview, selects, and hire new coding and support staff.

    2. Serves as a primary resource for coding staff regarding coding conventions and guidelines and HCS specific guidelines and processes. Researches coding guidelines and payer requirements as necessary to respond to coding questions. Monitors Coder productivity and day to day management of coding DNB/BWIP.

    3. Communicates process and policy changes including development and revision of new and existing and policies and procedures. Performs employee performance evaluations and work plans with development of goals and standards. Identifies areas of opportunity for improvement in quality and performance and coordinates with the Training and Quality team when necessary.

    4. Generates reports and builds reports as needed for productivity reporting and disease or procedure reporting as requested to manage the coding process and to respond to requests internal and external to HIM. Works with other departments in the HCS on key initiatives (physician departments, performance improvement, etc.) such as mortality reviews, PSI's, SOI/ROM, etc.

    5. Manages outside contract coding resources as needed to meet HCS DNB/BWIP goals. IP Supervisor participates in DRG reconciliation between coding and Clinical Documentation Integrity.

    Education Requirements:

    ? Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience).

    ? Successful completion of the UNC HCS Coder IP or OP Proficiency Test as applicable.

    Licensure/Certification Requirements:

    ? Must have one of the following: - AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) certification and credential - AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) certification and credential.

    Professional Experience Requirements:

    ? If a Bachelor's degree: Three (3) years of experience at the Lead or Senior Medical Coder level in medical coding.

    ? If an Associate's degree: Seven (7) years of medical coding experience with at least three (3) years of experience as lead or senior medical coder level.

    ? If a High School diploma or GED: Eleven (11) years of of medical coding experience with at least three (3) years of experience as lead or senior medical coder level.

    Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

    ? Strong knowledge of ICD-10/PCS/CPT/HCPCS coding and billing compliance (MS-DRGs/IPPS, APC/OPPS) with excellent analytical and data mining skills. Ability to effectively participate and supervise projects, plan and implement programs, and evaluate outcomes. Ability to effectively supervise and direct various levels of staff (including on-site and remote) as well as manage vendor relationships and expectations. Must possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Exhibits effective organizational skills, time management, management of multiple priorities and strong project management skills. Ability to interpret federal and state regulations as they relate to coding and compliance.
