    Surgical Liaison - 18 Hours

    Job Description:

    GENERAL SUMMARY: Circulating through the operating rooms, the surgical liaison takes notes on what time each surgery starts, records communications between the surgeons and the families, and keeps families posted on the progress of the surgeries. Also, the surgical liaison makes sure that the operating physicians know where the families are located and lets the families know when the doctors will be coming to speak with them.

    PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Commits to making every encounter with our patients, patients family, co-workers, physicians and other customers the best that it can be.

    • Complies with all Hospital policies and the Code of Business Conduct.

    • As required, maintains current license, life support certification, and tuberculosis testing.

    • Takes responsibility for own safety as well as the safety of patients, patients family, co-workers, physicians and other customers.

    • Greets and directs patients, visitors, and/or volunteers.

    • Disseminates information to waiting patients and family members/friends of surgical patients when requested by clinical staff.

    • Tracks location of family members/friends of surgical patients to facilitate surgeon/ significant other in postoperative interactions.

    • Disseminates information from surgeons/nurses to the waiting family members/friends of surgical patients when requested by clinical staff.

    • Maintains communication with the recovery room and day surgery staff to provide significant others with up-to-date information as to the patient's status.

    • Maintains the line of communication between the medical staff and waiting family members and helps to reduce the stress of waiting family members.

    • Orders and maintains inventory of supplies as needed on nursing unit.

    • Maintains medical records with necessary forms for daily use. Assists in assembling pre-operative charts for the next surgical day.

    • Organizes charts and returns to Health Information Management department on discharge.

    • Assists with patient transfers and discharges as necessary.

    • Receives and screens telephone calls, takes messages and relays information to appropriate staff.

    • Orders and maintains inventory of supplies as needed.

    • Reads emails on a regular basis to keep abreast of department communications.

    • Maintains and updates Policy and Procedure books for department.

    Participates in the following:

    • Mandatory training requirements as per unit/hospital policy

    • Continuing education/in-services to enhance knowledge

    • Staff meetings

    • Performance improvement initiatives

    • Orientation of new staff, students and/or volunteers

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • High School diploma required.

    • At least one year of administrative support experience preferred.

    • Basic medical terminology and computer skills required.

    • Requires interpersonal skills, especially with people from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds

    PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND VISUAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Ability to stand for long periods of time.

    • Ability to reach and grasp objects, lift and push heavy objects.

    • Ability to hear and communicate orally and in writing.

    • Ability to proofread and check documents for accuracy.

    • Ability to enter words and data into a computer.

    OSHA EXPOSURE: Job does not involve possible exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIP AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

    Reports to the Nurse Manager/Clinical Leader. Not responsible for supervising the work of others.
