  • Responsibilities

    Job Summary:

    The Technical Specialist is responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of results, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation, development of new procedures and instruments, writing/updating of procedure manuals, training of staff, providing both clinical and administrative supervisory support and manages inventory of supplies/reagents. Also responsible for the performance of all the duties of a Clinical Technologist III and IV, as needed.

    Direction Received:

    Technical Specialist reports to the onsite Medical Director and designated UR Laboratory Administrator.

    Direction Exercised:

    Section Supervisor, as applicable.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Performing the duties of a Clin Tech IV (40%).

    2. Maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments/procedures; documentation of essential information such as calibration data, calibration verification, and reagent lots, etc. (20%).

    3. Training of technologists and technicians on new procedures/instruments and monitors/evaluates competency of lab staff. (5%)

    4. Monitoring and ordering of reagents/supplies (5%).

    5. Workup of new instruments/procedures; writing/updating of procedure and safety manuals (10%).

    6. Coordinates and monitors QC trends (5%).

    7. Provides technical guidance to internal staff and external customers regarding appropriate laboratory assays to meet research objectives (5%).

    8. Participates in activities supporting laboratory operations, including protocol and system validation and industry and regulatory audits. (10%).

    6. Assists with workflow and daily scheduling.

    7. Travel to multiple laboratory locations to support clinical laboratory operations.

    Authorities:

    Generally works independently, seeking guidance from laboratory supervisors, and/or Faculty.

    Education/Experience:

    • MS in Clinical Chemistry, or related science and at least 3 years of relevant clinical laboratory experience.

    • BS in Medical Technology and at least 6 years of relevant clinical laboratory experience.

    • BS degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology and at least 7 years of relevant clinical laboratory experience.

    • AAS with a total of 90 credit hours (per NYS distribution requirements) and at least 7 years of relevant clinical laboratory experience.

    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • New York State License to Practice in the Clinical Laboratories

    Pay Range

    Pay Range: $ 34.50 - $ 44.85 Hourly

    The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
