  • What You Will Do

    Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Travel Accounting Manager 4. The selected candidate must demonstrate a passion for travel and a commitment to providing our employees with the best possible travel experience.

    The selected candidate will provide oversight and leadership to the travel group and report to the Controller division leader. The travel group provides support services for the LANL workforce, reservations, reimbursement functions including relocation reimbursement for new hires and employees on long-term external assignments. This position serves as a senior advisor supporting the coordination and oversight of compliance with internal policy and federal laws and regulations, accounting, audit requirements and the presentation of findings and specific recommendations to senior management. The travel manager will be expected to provide input and recommendations for system design and changes.

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    Management

    Demonstrated experience providing guidance and leadership to employees on all aspects of travel management, including compliance, travel policy, and travel risk management. Advanced knowledge of personnel policies and procedures and demonstrated skill in their application to selection, training and development, performance evaluation, salary administration and career discussion. Broad knowledge of EEO/diversity, staffing, and organizational development.

    Travel Experience

    Experience managing travel functions for a large organization. Demonstrated experience interpreting Federal Travel Regulations (FTR), Federal Acquisition Requirements (FAR) or Department of Energy Acquisition Regulations (DEAR). Extensive experience analyzing travel data and metrics to identify trends and opportunities for travel program improvements.

    Accounting Experience

    Extensive knowledge of accounting, financial concepts, and principles to include Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) and proper application of internal controls for accounting operation. Broad understanding of complex accounting and finance functions.

    Problem Solving

    Extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience researching, analyzing data, identifying performance deficiencies, and summarizing results. Demonstrated experience resolving problems and issues by evaluating alternative courses of action by making recommendations for improvement and developing strategies and procedures both independently and as a member of management. Strong tactical decision-making.

    Communication and Teamwork

    Demonstrated experience communicating and presenting detailed, complex information in an understandable manner across a diverse range of audiences; effectively interacting with customers, staff and senior level management and stakeholders; excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to effectively achieve decisions. Advanced organizational skills to independently establish priorities and execute complex business and financial assignments.

    Customer Service

    Demonstrated experience and ability to effectively provide proactive and responsive customer service. Demonstrated experience resolving customer and stakeholder problems, questions or requests for information based on changing business conditions or requirements.

    Technology

    Extensive experience and knowledge with Microsoft Office Suite. Advanced technical skills in Excel. Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Accounting Systems. Advanced experience using automated reservations and travel expense reimbursement systems.

    Education/Experience :

    Position requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate coursework may be desirable.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience with travel management, including online booking tools, expense management systems, travel risk management tools.

    • Experience using Enterprise software in support of business operations is a plus.

    • Technical acumen for information technology is a plus.

    • MBA/CPA or advanced degree in a related field.

    • Effective management of a complex organization subject to government regulations and experience with DOE regulations.

    Work Environment:

    Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

    Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

    *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (~~~) for additional information.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

    Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

    Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.     Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
