  • What You Will Do

    The Weapon Systems Engineering Division (W) is seeking to fill an R&D Manager 5 (Deputy Division Leader) position. W Division provides the system engineering and program management necessary to sustain the safety, reliability, and security of the Los Alamos National Laboratory's assets in the active United States nuclear stockpile - the B61, W76, W78 and W88. The Deputy Division Leader (DDL) for W Division will be responsible for supporting the Division Leader (DL) in management of the nuclear stockpile. The DDL will also assist the DL with workforce development, managing efficiency improvements with a focus on programmatic performance and managing resources to meet current and future programmatic needs of the Division.

    This will require collaboration with other Divisions and Programs with emphasis on the continuing partnership with the Weapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q Division). The DDL will share the technical and operational leadership and management of activities associated with stockpile assessment, weapons response and certification. The DDL will also work with the DL and the senior Division management team in providing strategic direction for W Division stockpile planning and capital investments; development and implementation of long-range stockpile planning; and development of a shared vision.

    The DDL must be result-oriented with solid leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. As a member of the Division management team, the DDL will share responsibility for promoting safety, security and quality in operations; recruiting; developing and mentoring personnel; promoting teamwork within the Division and across the Laboratory; and in demonstrating behaviors that promote a productive and respectful workplace.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    Technical

    Thorough knowledge of the Nuclear Weapons Program and the U.S. Stockpile

    Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing weapon systems engineering and technology solutions related to stockpile stewardship responsibilities.

    Demonstrated experience in providing approvals and collaboration with test organizations for oversight of hazardous operations, teaming with sister organizations to safely execute experiments and to advance long-term facility and capability plans

    Communication

    Demonstrated excellence in communication and interpersonal skills evidenced through recent management assignments, internal and external interactions, briefings, presentations, and documentation.

    Ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel and customers; strong teaming skills and managing conflict.

    Leadership

    Demonstrated commitment to Laboratory goals of coaching employees, diversity, recruiting, and employee development.

    Demonstrated commitment to Lab goals in the areas of security, safety, environment and compliance.

    Strategy & Collaboration

    Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with others at all levels, work cooperatively in a team environment and build consensus, and expeditiously and professionally resolve conflict

    Experience building collaborative relationships across LANL, and/or with other national laboratories, universities, and the private sector.

    Safety & Security

    Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

    Education/Experience : Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Expert knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Weapon Systems Engineering, Weapons Engineering Analysis, Weapon Safety, Weapon Surveillance and/or Weapon Production activities.

    • Demonstrated experience working with the NNSA Production Agencies.

    • Familiarity with LANL policies and procedures related to Human Performance Improvement, Safe Conduct of Research principles, High Explosives safety and complex operations.

    • In depth knowledge of the weapons program structure, reporting systems, financial management systems, and other applicable business systems.

    • Active DOE Q Clearance

    • Education: Master's degree or PhD in Science or Engineering preferred.

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

    Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

    *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (~~~) for additional information..

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

    Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

    Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
